Inspired Marketing Friday: Get There Slower

So much of marketing is a means to an end. You go to networking meetings so you can meet potential customers. You write guest blog posts so you can expand your reach. You promote your mailing list so you can eventually get 1,000 subscribers. And then 5,000 subscribers. Then 10,000.

When does it end? When do you finally reach that elusive place called success?

It’s a trick question, because the process of marketing never really ends. And that’s not a bad thing. But it does require keeping things in perspective. The video above is an excellent reminder of this.

In addition to teaching scuba full time in Seattle, I am a “brand manager” for a scuba manufacturer. I find my biggest challenge is not taking time to look at the progress I’ve made…and rather see how far I have to go. Sometimes it’s nice (and re-energizing) to look at where you’ve come from as well.

Great point, Cindy! Taking a step back from the day-to-day work of marketing is a great way to see how far you’ve come. Another one of my favorite techniques for keeping things in perspective is the warm fuzzy file. I blogged about it last year: http://www.onewomanmarketing.com/warm-fuzzy-file

  • I take an analytical approach and track metrics on a day-to-day basis. If I can see I’m one step closer to my goal, that keeps me energized. It also tells me when I’ve done enough and can step away from the computer for some “me” or “we” time.
