Do You Know Lilly Ledbetter?
You should. Here’s why: despite having equal rights, women are still only earning only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. And in some states, including my home state of Pennsylvania, the wage gap is increasing.
The Story Behind The Story
In 1998, an Alabama woman named Lilly Ledbetter sued her employer of 20 years after realizing, by way of an anonymous note, just how large her pay gap really was.
An initial court ruling awarded Ledbetter $3.8 million, but the Supreme Court kept her from benefiting because she didn’t file the suit within 180 days of the original payroll decision.
Today, President Obama signed the Ledbetter Act into law. The bill essentially reversed the Supreme Court decision, and will make it easier for employees to sue for wage discrimination. But the glass ceiling still exists—and the wage gap proves it.
