2 Responses to Three Ways To Get A Custom Logo—And Which Is Best

    Hi Nikki :)

Not sure if my input is welcome, but I thought a good point to note is that using stock photos or illustrations in logos is generally not a good idea. The first reason is that you can’t trademark the symbol and never really own it. It can never be truly unique to your business, the same as using clip art.

The second is that major stock sites, like iStockPhoto.com, actually state that it is considered “Prohibited Use” to use any of their stock content in a logo, design mark or business name as it violates their terms of use.

I think it’s something that people don’t always take into consideration when DIY’ing, as the only thing that matters to them is cost, not the legal or overall brand implications.

Great idea for an article. :)

    Hi Marnie,

Of course your input is completely welcome!

I agree 100% that stock photos and images are definitely something to steer away from. Logos are supposed to be original after all and you’re right the legal implications can be massive. I mentioned it because I have personal experience with clients who have done exactly that and then come to me to redesign it slightly after receiving a “seize and desist” letter. As a designer I just can’t accept work which is breaching a copyright, so the client has to start from scratch and they’re out even more money.

Personally I avoid stock photos like the plague for most design work because I hate the idea of picking up someone else’s work and seeing the same thing.

You’re completely right that most DIY-ers don’t even think about legal aspects, if cost is really the only thing that matters then they should think about cost now vs. legal fees down the track

Thanks for your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the article!
